Hi everyone! After 10 months abroad this past year, I seem unable to get used to this darned Calgary weather (winter in early October?!) Luckily for us all the cold doesn't seem to be affecting my creative mind.

My experiences in Malta left me raring to go. I resumed my regular Wednesday night gig dancing aboard the real Black Pearl, the pirate ship that was owned by Errol Flynn in the 50's, and even had one our very own PRO students, Syenna, join me for a show! I had my debut solo burlesque performance in London. I had sold out shows in London, Liverpool, Manchester, Amsterdam & a castle in Potsdam, just outside Berlin, with our sister troupe Kabuki Guns Burlesque. Not being able to deny my love of flowers, I got a job at the best flower shop in Malta, Il-Qronfla, where they pretty much gave me free range to do whatever I wanted! I was doing all the flowers at 5 star hotels, weddings, funerals, special events… it was truly amazing!! About 20 Studio Sublime Belly Dancers went to Egypt as well. We trained with Aida Nour & Kyrea, the last of the Gawazi tribe. One of the evening events was a trip to a Cairo night club with belly dancers and a live band which I got to perform with. Even though the band spoke broken English, there was still a slight language barrier. They were asking me what I wanted them to play to which I responded, "It doesn't matter, I can dance to anything..." They kept saying, "Hakim, Hakim?" I just nodded and smiled. Then when they started to play I recognized the song as the Oum Kolthoum song I had choreographed for my Dervish veil piece. What luck!! I danced my choreography, knocked everyone's socks off, and had the time of my life!

After all that time overseas, I've returned with even more enthusiasm and a whole bunch of new tricks and choreographies up my sleeves, as those of you in my classes currently already know! Our Alice in Wonderland production on December 6th at the Loose Moose Theatre is going to be out of this world, I can assure you that you won't want to miss it. With guest troupes such as The Little Fish, Daughter's of the Nile, Eighth Wonder and The Bedouin performing with us, I'm sure poor Alice won't know what to make of my weird and wonderful interpretation of her world!

It has been so good spending time with all of you again. I missed you a ton while I was gone and appreciate all the support you gave me. On that note I'll be asking for your support again soon-- in the new year I will be returning to Malta for a short few months to give the Maltese some Burlesque lessons and escape this cold. Don't worry though, as always I will line up something exceptional for you. You won't be disappointed and I'll be back in town before you know it.

Keep shimmying and undulating your little hearts out, my friends, and let's continue to make the best out of what remains of 2009!

xx + one shimmy,
Laaryah
